Like Rainbow Dash, I have the hardest time trying to get her mane to look right.
I just need help getting the first few steps started.
Rainbow dash's mane is difficult, which I agree, as you would need to harmonize that 7 colours with the background ambient and light. I reference other painting and try to mix the colour myself.

But remember, what's important is to have a good grasp of art fundamentals, such as lighting, colour, perspective and proportions. A person with a well-defined art fundamentals can easily paint using a lighter program, such as PaintTool SAI, just as good as a more professional software like Corel Painter and Photoshop.
